Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) Workshops

What is ABCD?

ABCD stands for Asset-Based Community Development. In short, ABCD challenges the traditional approach of community development, where people focus on what their needs are and then try to find resources to solve them, instead focussing first on what assets they already have (people, physical assets, buildings, skills and talents, etc) and then seeing what and how needs can be met based on them.

ABCD refers to a type of community development based on the work of Professors Jody Kretzmann and John McKnight. It challenges the traditional deficit-based approach that tries to solve urban and rural development problems by focusing on the needs and deficiencies of individuals, neighbourhoods, towns, villages, etc. Instead, it demonstrates that local assets (people, physical assets etc.) and individual strengths are key to ensure sustainable community development, and that people have a life of their own choosing.

ABCD will transform the way you approach your community development.

In Autumn 2021, Sandwell Churches Link ran a series of 6 Community Development Workshops- using the principles of ABCD. The workshops were run in partnership with Sandwell Council and led by Tim Evans. The workshops received very positive reviews and Sandwell Churches Link were delighted to offer two more Introductory workshops which were held in March 2022.

ABCD Squared

New ABCD Course staring January 2023!

Building on the success of our last course, Sandwell Churches’ Link will be hosting another ABCD course during the first part of 2023; starting in January.

Would you like to help your community to thrive? Would you like to recognise the assets and potential it already has, harness them and grow them? Then Discovering ABCD is for you!

ABCD is the way to build healthier, safer, prosperous and more inclusive communities from the ground up. It demonstrates that local assets (people, physical assets etc.) and individual strengths are key to ensure sustainable community development.
